Art Show

We are pleased to partner with the 14th Street Y to present this year’s art show “Peace Corps Creates…Art By Returned Volunteers.” The show will be on display in the Y’s lobby gallery from March 7th to April 11th.

Each artist spent at least two years overseas in service to their country as Peace Corps Volunteers. Whether they worked in education, community development or public health – Peace Corps service is a life-changer and a deeply formative experience. We invite you to meet one of our artists from this year’s show below.

Ken Shuey

Malaysia, 1963-65

Ken Shuey on his painting included in the show: This painting is based on my own experience as a Peace Corps Teacher in upriver Sarawak on the island of Borneo. I will never forget the happy faces that welcomed me to their school when I arrived at the school jetty by outboard engine powered dugout canoe. Their positive attitudes were infectious, They not only studied hard but they did their own laundry by hand from a single cold water tap. They were their own janitors and grounds keepers for the school. Their good will and friendship transformed my life. I will never forget them.
